 Accessories

Accessories are identified by the transmitter
according to the internal wiring of the plug.
For this reason it is important to use only
accessories which are approved for use
with the RD5000WLT. For more information
please contact Radiodetection or visit:

www.radiodetection.com

No accessory

When no accessories are plugged in default
operation is induction mode, outputting the
transmitter signal via the internal induction
coil.

Direct connect leads (output)

When this accessory is plugged into the
accessory socket, the transmitter output
switches from internal induction to direct
connect. The locate signal will appear as an
alternating voltage on the direct connect
clips.

Transmitter signal clamp

When this accessory is plugged into the
accessory socket, the transmitter output
switches to signal clamp mode. The locate
signal will appear on the clamp and be
transferred by induction to the selected
target line.

Battery charger (input)

When this accessory is plugged into the
accessory socket, the transmitter will
switch off all locate signals and connect the
charging circuit to the Li-Ion battery.

Installation/Operation

The RD5000WLT transmitter is battery
powered; it does not have a protective earth
connection, and cannot be powered by an
external power supply.
The internal lithium-ion battery can be
charged using the supplied charger. The
transmitter will not transmit a locate signal
while charging.
The RD5000WLT transmitter is controlled
by a single button – operation is explained in
the user guide.

When using direct connection, hazardous
voltages may be present on the croc clips of
the direct connect lead and these voltages
may appear on other accessible conductors.
Therefore it is essential to be aware of the
hazards and protect against them.
Take appropriate precautions to minimize
the risks:
•  Check that the target conductor is not

live before making connections.

•  Make connections first, before powering

up the transmitter.

•  Protect the connections (e.g. to the earth

spike if used or other connection points)
from public access.

•  Warn other workers on site that

conductors may be hazardous.

•  Keep direct connect voltage as low as

possible for the survey.

•  Keep the connection time as short as

possible.

Maintenance

Regularly check the condition of all
accessories and the casing of the
RD5000WLT transmitter. Pay particular
attention to the condition of the Direct
Connect accessory leads as these can
operate at voltages deemed to be hazardous
when wet. Specifically, check that insulation
is not broken and replace any worn parts.
The RD5000WLT transmitter has no user
serviceable parts other than replacement
of the fuse or provision of auxiliary D-cell
batteries.
The fuse must be replaced with an equivalent
20mm x 5mm 2A Time Delay Fuse.
The 4 × D-cell batteries used must all be of
the same type. Renew them all at the same
time.
If the RD5000WLT transmitter is dirty,
wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild
detergent. Avoid the use of solvents or other
strong chemicals.

Locating pipes and cables
with the RD5000

Applying the signal using direct connection

In direct connection, you connect the transmitter output directly to the pipe or
to the conductor of the cable you wish to survey. The transmitter will then apply
an active frequency signal, which you can locate using the locator. This is the
preferred method for providing the strongest signal on a particular line and is
particularly useful for long distance tracing.
Connecting the transmitter to a pipe or cable in direct connect mode, requires the
use of a direct connection lead, which is connected to the accessory socket of
the transmitter. The red lead is connected to the pipe or cable and the black lead
connected to an earth stake to complete the electrical circuit.

WARNING! In Direct connect mode, output voltage can be up to 30V RMS

which is POTENTIALLY LETHAL in wet conditions.

WARNING! Direct connection to live wires is POTENTIALLY LETHAL.

Direct connections should be made by competent personnel only. DO NOT
connect to live conductors!

Applying the signal using induction

When it is not possible to use the transmitter in direct connection mode, the
transmitter can be placed on the ground over or near the survey area with the
arrow on the transmitter in line with the target line. The transmitter will then
induce the signal indiscriminately to any nearby buried metallic conductors. When
using the transmitter in induction mode it should be noted that the signal from the
transmitter will transmit not only below the transmitter but above the transmitter
and it is recommended that the locator should not be used within a minimum of 15
meters (50 feet) from the transmitter.

Applying the signal using a transmitter signal clamp

When it is not possible to use either direct connection or induction methods, a
transmitter signal clamp, can be used to induce the signal onto the target line.
Connect the clamp to the accessory socket of the transmitter and fit the clamp
around the target line. The clamp is particularly useful with insulated live cables as
this removes the need to disable the power and break into the line.
