Overheating o
of tthe b
brakes
Warning
•
Never llet tthe b
brakes “
“rub” b
by
pressing tthe p
pedal ttoo llightly
when y
you d
do n
not rreally n
need tto
brake. T
This c
causes tthe b
brakes tto
overheat, lleads tto llonger b
braking
distances a
and tto a
a h
higher llevel o
of
wear.
•
Before s
starting o
on a
a llong s
stretch
of rroad iin a
a v
very h
hilly a
area, p
please
reduce y
your s
speed, c
change tto a
a
lower g
gear ((manual g
gearbox) o
or
choose a
a llower p
position ((auto-
matic g
gearbox). IIn tthis w
way y
you
will u
use tthe b
braking p
power o
of tthe
engine a
and rrelieve p
pressure o
on tthe
brakes.
•
If a
a ffront s
spoiler, ffull s
size w
wheel
trims e
etc., iis rretrofitted, iit iis
necessary tto e
ensure tthat tthe fflow
of a
air tto tthe ffront b
brakes iis n
not
restricted –
– o
otherwise tthe b
brakes
can o
overheat.
Servobrake
Warning
The s
servo iis o
operated b
by a
a v
vacuum
which iis o
only g
generated w
when tthe
engine iis rrunning. F
For tthis rreason
the v
vehicle s
should n
not b
be a
allowed
to rroll w
with tthe e
engine s
switched
off.
When tthe b
brake s
servo iis n
not w
work-
ing b
because, ffor e
example, tthe
vehicle iis b
being ttowed o
or a
a d
defect
has o
occurred o
on tthe b
brake s
servo
itself, tthe b
brake p
pedal m
must b
be
pressed c
considerably h
harder tto
compensate ffor tthe a
absence o
of
servo a
assistance.
Anti-locking b
brake s
system*
The ABS plays a major part in increasing
the active safety of the vehicle. The big
advantage when compared with a conven-
tional brake system is that even when
braking hard on a slippery road surface
the best possible steerability is retained
for the road condition because the wheels
do not lock. Steering c
control iis tthere-
fore m
maintained, g
giving tthe b
best d
dri-
ving s
stability p
possible.
However, one must not expect the ABS
system to shorten the braking distance
under all conditions. When driving on
gravel or on fresh snow covering a slip-
pery surface, i.e. when one should be dri-
ving very slowly and carefully, the stop-
ping distance may even be slightly longer.
