and number of successful fixes on species that spend much of their time stationary where
the GPS would not get a fix.
6.6a How the Smart GPS works
While the Smart GPS feature is enabled an accelerometer measures movement. Anytime
the accelerometer senses a movement that exceeds the Smart GPS Threshold it adds to
the Smart GPS counter, both of which are set by the user. If during the time period
between scheduled GPS attempts, the Smart GPS Minimum Counter does not exceed the
user programmed Smart GPS Threshold, a GPS fix will not be attempted. When
programmed properly, this will prevent the GPS from attempting fixes in periods of little
or no movement, thus extending the lifespan of the battery. Users may also set how
many GPS positions they would like skipped before the GPS unit is forced to attempt a
fix using the optional, Smart GPS Skip function discussed in
Section 6.6d
.
6.6b Keys to successfully using your smart GPS sensor
•
Always program your smart GPS sensor before programming your GPS. If you
program your GPS before programming your Smart GPS sensor, the GPS unit
will lose its date and time which triggers GPS attempts automatically every 20
minutes. Do not allow this to occur. If you inadvertently do program your GPS
first and the smart GPS sensor second, you will have to open Collar SW and set
the time again. Please refer to the Programming your Quantum 4000 Enhanced
sections, set time.
•
In order to understand how different movements relate to the Smart GPS
Threshold please use the graphical interface in the Motion software. As you
move the GPS unit in your hands you will see the movement represented both
numerically and graphically. Adjusting the user programmable settings varies the
movement levels at which the smart GPS sensor triggers GPS position skipping.
•
You cannot set the Smart GPS sensor remotely.
•
GPS positions will not take place under the following conditions: the USB is
plugged in, the magnets are in place or no GPS schedule is set. However you may
interact with the settings when these conditions exist.
•
Test your Smart GPS thoroughly to be certain that the Smart GPS Threshold and
Smart GPS Minimum Count are not set too high. It is possible for the Smart GPS
to skip every fix if not programmed properly. To avoid this scenario, please see
Section 6.6d
for information on the optional Smart GPS Skip feature.
