Chapter 1: Introduction
The Stratum is a wireless Ethernet bridge designed to deliver dedicated full duplex 20 Mbps or 100 Mbps
connectivity with fiber reliability. The Stratum transports all Ethernet traffic types in addition to two T1 channels.
With full duplex Ethernet bridging and two T1 links for applications such as voice traffic, Stratum satisfies many
short haul, high capacity communications needs.
In contrast to millimeter wave equipment, Stratum delivers high throughput with none of the negative factors
associated with millimeter waves. There’s no worry about rain fades or poor bit error rates. Stratum links perform
as well as fiber, at a fraction of the cost and with far less time to deploy.
Features
•
Full duplex 20 Mbps or 100 Mbps LAN bridging
•
Dual T1 transport for TDM voice and data traffic without impact to LAN performance
•
Unlicensed U-NII band operation allows fast deployment and is immune to weather fades
•
Fiber class performance
•
Fully SNMP managed using industry standard platforms such as HP OpenView
Product Overview
Proxim’s Stratum is the first product operating in the U-NII bands to merge high capacity voice and data with ease
of installation and operation. Stratum incorporates a MAC layer Ethernet bridge for high capacity bridging of all
Ethernet traffic types, including IP and Voice-over-IP. With auto-negotiation for 10/100 Ethernet, full or half
duplex LAN support combined with 802.1d Spanning Tree functionality, Stratum requires very little in the way of
initial configuration. In addition to the 20 Mbps or 100 Mbps full duplex bridging capabilities, Stratum includes two
DSX-1 interfaces for transport of voice between digital PBXs or other T1 traffic. The DSX-1 interfaces operate
equally well for channelized or unchannelized T1 applications.
Operating at distances of up to 7 miles, Stratum far outperforms ISM band radios and Infrared devices. Also,
Stratum is easily managed using SNMP or the native HTML Graphical User Interface.
