Step 5. Connecting to Ethernet
Connecting the Hardware
Note
: The RJ-45 port and MII port cannot be used simultaneously.
If the RJ-45 port is used to connect the IDU to a hub or switch, use a straight through data cable. To connect to a
router or a PC/server, use a crossover cable.
Connecting Ethernet to the Other IDU
Connect an Ethernet cable to the second IDU following the procedure described above and earlier in this chapter.
Use the console port to set the Ethernet parameters if you have not done so already.
Verifying Ethernet Connectivity Over the Link
Connect to the console port to access the user interface, as described in Step #3 earlier in this chapter. From the
Main Menu, use the down arrow to highlight
[Diagnostics..]
and press
Enter
to view to the Diagnostics menu.

To verify Ethernet connectivity, enter the IP address of the remote Stratum in the
Target IP Addr:
field. Set the
Timeout
value with the number of seconds to perform the ping test. Pings will be sent once per second for the
specified time.
Use the down arrow to highlight
[Start_Ping]
and press
Enter
to begin the test.
As the test proceeds, the
Target
field will be updated to show if the target responded. This field will display
No
Answer
if the target does not respond. If the target responds correctly, this field will display
Alive
.
