System Overview
1.1 Introduction
Portwell’s ROBO-8820VG2, a dual Xeon processor based PICMG 1.2 SHB got very
good response from customers because its powerful computing power and
expansion capability. However, they cannot find a suitable board for their middle
level product planning that just needs single P4 processor and dual bus expansion.
Intel IPD creates a special I/O controller hub that meets the requirement exactly.
6300ESB, the ICH that supports one PCI bus and one PCI-X bus (64-bit/66MHz) can
be implement in that kind of SHB to support dual independent, one low and one
high speed expansion bus without extra bridge. Another excellent feature of it is
dual SATA port. SATA interface definitely the one that will replace traditional IDE
interface from the trend of chipset and storage device manufacture.
Intel 845GV is the GMCH (Graphics Memory Controller Hub) that is selected as the
companion chip of 6300ESB for ROBO-8716VG2A due to it supports Pentium 4,
Celeron processor with integrated graphics controller. With extension processor
support of Pentium 4-M processor, the TDP of CPU lowers to around 35W, similar as
P3 processor. It is really good news to those appliances in 1U form factor.
ROBO-8716VG2A is the superior key to PCI & PCI-X hybrid add-in cards because of
the native support of 6300ESB and PCIMG 1.2. Applications that need this kind of
architecture are data acquisition, image processing, media streaming and network
appliance.
