2. System overview
2.1 The PIKO SmartMeasure Car
The PIKO SmartMeasure Car is a high-tech piece of model railroad equipment. The idea of digitally measuring various aspects of a layout is
a new concept in model railroading. The car has WLAN capability that feeds data to a PC, Tablet, or SmartPhone where it can be displayed in
real-time. The data gathered can be assigned to an archive where it can be used to evaluate a model or check its maintenance cycle. When used
on a digital layout, the SmartMeasure Car can run on its own DCC address, or the car can “listen” to an assigned locomotive’s decoder using a
“sniffer” address. The car’s digital display is controlled either by your DCC throttle or the on-board keypad.
2.2 Technical features:
• movable side doors with digital display on one side and keypad on the other side
• two-color display that shows actual measured values
• touch-sensitive panels on left and right of screen for scrolling through displays
• onboard memory for recording measurement sessions (up to 3h when WLAN is deactivated!)
• onboard rechargeable battery for Standalone function (without track power or on AC-track; up to 120 minutes of data when WLAN is activated)
• keypad for manual selection of different options: (i.e. activate WLAN, language selection, or “Start measurement”)
• all-wheel electrical contact for power, measuring, and charging)
• sensor attached to inside wheel face for measuring speed and distance
• USB port for module configuration, data transfer, firmware updates, and battery charging
• car weight of approximately 80 grams (2.8 oz.)
