9.3.2
Adding More Memory
The basic unit has 32MBytes of memory
installed as two 16MByte SIMMs (Single
In-line Memory Modules) in two of the four
sockets.
The memory can be increased by adding
another pair of SIMMs in the other two sockets,
or by replacing the existing SIMMs.
A
The SIMMs must be fitted in pairs in
each bank, and both SIMMs in a pair
must be of the same size.
The SIMM sockets are located half way down
the left hand side of the motherboard, and the
existing 32MBytes are fitted in the lower pair of
sockets.
To add more memory in the upper pair of
sockets, the plug-in boards may need to be
removed as described in section 9.14. The upper
pair of sockets can now be accessed.
Fit the SIMM in the lower socket first by
inserting it at an angle with the connector edge
downwards, ensuring that it is located fully in the
bottom of the socket. Rotate the body of the SIMM
downwards to locate on the pegs at each end of the
socket, and push it down firmly so that the clips at
each end hold it in place. (See the existing SIMM
mounting).
Should the memory be increased to a size requiring
the existing SIMMs to be removed, then these can be
removed by moving the clips at each end of the
socket away from the SIMM so that it “pops up”. The
upper SIMM must be removed first. When fitting the
replacement SIMMs, the lowest SIMM must be
installed first.
A
If the SIMMs are not installed correctly the
system will not recognise them at switch on,
possibly causing the system to “hang”. This
will normally be indicated by the PC speaker
“beeping” at approximately one second
intervals. If one SIMM of a pair is not
installed correctly, neither SIMM will be
recognised.
