This chapter describes the recommended method
for dismantling the Synergy Mobile in order to
upgrade the unit, or to replace sub-assemblies in
the event of a fault occurring.
Instructions are supplied for removing all boards
and sub-assemblies, some of which may not be
fitted, dependent on the system configuration.
The Synergy Mobile consists mainly of a PC
tower which is an enclosed metal box (for RFI
screening). The Tower contains the PC mother
board, Accessories Card, DSP board, sound card ,
EP stimulator board (optional), network card
(optional) and graphics card (optional).
Before dismantling the tower, disconnect all
peripheral devices e.g. keyboard, headbox etc.
A
Before performing any service operations
on the Synergy Mobile , ensure that the unit
is switched off and disconnected from the
mains supply.
A
Anti-static precautions must be observed
when handling the boards in this system.
When removing any screws in the system, make a
note of which screw type (size and length) fits
where, to ensure that the correct screws are
refitted. Damage may result if too long a screw is
fitted in some parts of the system e.g. disk drives
etc. It is also essential that any washers removed
with the screws are replaced as these may be
needed to act as spacers under the screw heads.
If replacing any screws in the system, ensure that
they are of the correct type (size and length). The
screw sizes given in this chapter are all pan head
pozi type unless otherwise specified.
9.1 Removing Parts From Inside The
Tower
9.1.1
PC Tower Cover Removal
Before the main PC Tower cover can be removed
take off the cover over the front of the I/O board.
To remove this pull outwards on the left hand edge
of the cover and then unclip it from the right hand
side. Now remove the three connectors that are
revealed.
Turn the key if required to unlock the cover. With
the front of the tower towards you. Locate the two
levers that are on the sides at the front of the
tower. Lift these levers up to 90
°,
the metal cover
can now be slid forwards and removed. Should the
cover not slide off easily, then while holding the
levers with the fingers, gently press with thumbs
on the edges front of the floppy disk drive bezel.
Re-fitting the cover of the unit is the reverse
process to the above.Take care not to trap or
damage any cables as the cover is re-fitted.
When re-fitting the cover to the chassis note the
bottom edges of the cover must be engaged in
channels in the chassis. This can be done by
pressing in the bottom edges just after the cover
has begun to be slid on.
9.1.2
Removing the PC Tower Power Supply
Remove the cover as described in section 9.1.1.
Disconnect the power loom connectors from all
internal devices e.g. motherboard, disk drives.
Locate and remove the four screws through the
lower rear of the tower that secure the PSU in
position.
Carefully manoeuvre the PSU out of the chassis.
Refitting of the PSU is the reverse process to the
above. Ensure that all cables are reconnected
correctly or damage may result.
9.1.3
Removing cooling duct
This directs air from the PC’s rear fan towards the
CPU heatsink. To remove the duct raise the front
edge and pull upwards and frorwards.
Some models of PC Towers may have the cooling
fan mounted in the duct rather than on the rear
panel. If this is the case then it may be necessary
to disconnect the lead to the fan from the K10 plug
at the end of the Accessories card.
Re-fitting the duct is the reverse process to the
above. Remember to re-connect the fan if it has
been previously disconnected, both duct and fan
are vital to prevent the CPU from overheating..
9.1.4
Removing the “Plug-In boards”
Before removing boards it will often be necessary
to remove the plastic cooling duct see previous
section 9.1.3. There can be up to five “plug-in”
boards in the chassis – two are fitted as standard,
and three are optional. These boards are located in
the top half of the chassis, and are plugged in to
the horizontally mounted “Accessories Card”.
The boards are normally fitted in the same slots in
the Accessories card. The order starting from the
PC motherboard end of the Accessories card is as
follows :–
¨
The optional Graphics board. This is located
in the white PCI slot nearest to the
motherboard.
