This section will help you prepare the Detective-EX for use as quickly as possible. Therefore,
some of the steps are not explained in detail; however, references to additional information are
provided.
2.8.1. Connecting the Detective-EX to the Charger Base and Powering It On
The first startup step is to connect the Detective-EX to its docking station or power adapter/
charger to power the cooler and begin charging the internal lithium-ion battery.
!
Place the charger base on a hard, level surface. If using the docking station, its underside
must be kept clear so air can circulate to help dissipate heat from the cooler. See the
cautions in Section 2.7 (page 18).
!
AC — Connect the charger base’s output cable to the front-panel POWER IN connector,
then connect the mains power adapter cord to mains power.
or
DC — Connect the dc power cord to the front-panel POWER IN connector, then to a
suitable dc power source.
!
Place the Detective-EX on the docking station or beside the PAC-II, and attach the
charger base’s output cable to the Detective-EX INPUT POWER connector. To attach
the cable to the Detective-EX, unscrew the dust cap from the INPUT POWER connector
on the Detective-EX’s rear panel; slide the coupling ring on the male (cable-end)
connector fully open; align the 5 keys on the male connector with the slots on the rear-
panel female connector; press to fully seat the male connector, then hold it in place; and
rotate the coupling ring approximately 1/8th of a turn clockwise until it seats securely.
The internal battery will begin charging and will typically reach full charge in 3–4 hours
(well before the detector has cooled to operating temperature range).
!
As soon as power is applied, the computer will automatically begin its boot-up sequence,
and within 20–40 seconds the cooler will start running. After the computer initializes, the
DetectiveEX
software application will start up in Survey Mode. As noted above, the
internal battery will not charge until the detector is cooled to operating temperature. After
that, the battery will typically reach full charge in 3–4 hours. If the cooler does not start
by itself, see the next section.
!
Note the Status indicator on the display. On startup (Fig. 13), it will read:
Status: Detector is Warm
