SHORT CIRCUIT - A part of a circuit that comes in contact with part of the same circuit, or unintentionally
touches a metallic object, resulting in voltage loss to another component wire or to ground. Can result in
wrong component being operated, or blown circuit protection device (fuse or breaker). To test for short cir-
cuit, use volt/ohm meter and check for very low resistance in different parts of circuit, or check continuity
between circuit wire and ground.
SOLENOID - Circular coil used for producing a magnetic field.
SWITCHES - Device used to control and direct current to circuits, and will remain in selected position until
changed.
SWITCHES (MOMENTARY) - Used to direct current to circuits. These switches will return to neutral position
when released.
VOLT - Unit of electrical pressure which causes current to flow in a circuit.
VOLTAGE - The force which is generated to cause current to flow in an electrical circuit. Voltage is measured
in volts.
VOLTMETER - Instrument for measuring force in volts of electrical current. Voltmeters are connected in par-
allel to the points where voltage is to be measured.

HARGING
The starting and charging components of the cranking circuit include the master switch, ignition switch,
transmission neutral switch, batteries, start relay, starter motor, alternator, and the optional cold start system
with its associated switch and ether injector.
When the key switch is turned to the start position, 12 volts DC power is routed to the starter relay which
closes and energizes the starter solenoid, activating the starter motor and engaging the drive assembly,
pushing the starting pinion gear into contact with the flywheel ring gear. An interlock switch in the transmis-
sion neutral circuit prevents the starting voltage from reaching the starting relay if the transmission is not in
the neutral position.
When the engine starts, the key is returned to the run position and the alternator, driven by a single V-belt
from the engine crankshaft, then provides charging voltage to the batteries.
Refer to the electrical schematics for more detailed information.
