Reference Guide for the Model RH340 Internet Access ISDN Router
Advanced Configuration
5-3
Your ISP maintains a DNS server for the use of its customers. Most ISPs transfer the address of
this server to the router during login. If your browser is unable to locate any Web sites by name,
then it is likely that your ISP did not transfer a DNS address. In this case, you must ask your ISP
for the DNS address and provide it to the router or directly to the PC.
If you select “Get automatically from ISP,” when your PC boots up and receives its DHCP
configuration information from the router, the router provides its own address to your PC as a
proxy DNS server. The router obtains the actual DNS address from the ISP during login and then
forwards DNS requests and results between your PC and the actual DNS server.
If you select “Use this address,” enter the ISP’s DNS server address in the box provided. The
router delivers this DNS address to the PCs by DHCP when the PCs are rebooted.
Local Server
When you use the Model RH340 router with a single-user ISP account, the router’s NAT function
prevents Internet locations from directly accessing the PCs on your LAN. There are two
circumstances in which you may want to bypass NAT:
•
You may want to make a local server (such as a Web server) available to the outside Internet.
•
You may want to run an application (such as a game or a videoconferencing program) that
does not work properly with NAT.
In these cases, you may specify one PC (for example, a Web server or game host) on your local
network to be accessible to the Internet by selecting “Forward to this local address” in the Local
Server section. Type the PC’s private IP address in the box provided. If you want to use this local
server feature, NETGEAR recommends that you change the TCP/IP configuration of your PCs to
use fixed addresses rather than DHCP-assigned addresses. This precaution prevents the local
server’s IP address from being changed by the router’s DHCP server.
Note:
You must reboot your PCs after configuring the router with this DNS address.
