Preparing Your Network

Chapter 3
Preparing Your Network
This chapter describes the preparation for connecting your PCs to the Internet using an ISDN
router. Before configuring your router, you must perform the following tasks:
•
Order ISDN service from your phone company
•
Configure your PCs for using the TCP/IP networking protocol
•
Order Internet service from an Internet service provider (ISP)
Details of these tasks are given in the following sections.
ISDN Services Checklist
Contact the ISDN Ordering Center of your local phone company to order an ISDN Basic Rate
Interface (BRI) phone line. In most of North America, your telephone company can properly
provision your ISDN line when you provide them with an ISDN Ordering Code (IOC) or
EZ-ISDN code. The NETGEAR Model RH340 router supports the following ordering codes:
•
IOC-S (basic voice and data service)
•
EZ-ISDN-1 (basic voice and data plus supplemental voice services)
If you want to use incoming call bumping, you must ask your phone company to enable Additional
Call Offering (ACO) for one or both of your ISDN channels (directory numbers). Incoming call
bumping enables the router to receive a voice call when both ISDN channels are in use for a data
call. One channel is dropped to allow the incoming call, and the data rate is reduced during the
call.
Note:
The supplemental voice services offered in EZ-ISDN (for example, call waiting
and call forwarding) are not supported by the Model RH340 router.
