HOLD function
General notes
The HOLD function can assist you in the follow-
ing situations:
R
when pulling away, especially on an uphill gra-
dient
R
when manoeuvring on a hill
R
when waiting in traffic
The vehicle is kept stationary without the driver
having to depress the brake pedal.
When you depress the accelerator pedal to pull
away, the braking effect is cancelled and the
HOLD function is deactivated.
Important safety notes

WARNING
When leaving the vehicle, it can still roll away
despite being braked by the HOLD function if:
R
there is a malfunction in the system or in
the voltage supply
R
the HOLD function is deactivated by the
accelerator pedal being depressed, e.g. by
a vehicle occupant
R
the electrical system in the engine com-
partment, the battery or the fuses are tam-
pered with
R
the battery is disconnected
There is a risk of an accident.
Before leaving the vehicle, always deactivate
the HOLD function and secure the vehicle
from rolling away.

When DISTRONIC PLUS or the HOLD func-
tion is activated, the vehicle brakes automat-
ically in certain situations.
To avoid damage to the vehicle, deactivate
DISTRONIC PLUS and the HOLD function in
the following or similar situations:
R
when towing away
R
in a car wash
Switching off the HOLD function (

page 221).
Activation conditions
You can activate the HOLD function once all of
the following conditions have been fulfilled:
R
the vehicle is stationary.
R
the engine is running or has been switched off
by the ECO start/stop function.
R
all the doors and the tailgate are closed, or
your seatbelt is fastened.
R
the electric parking brake is released.
R
vehicles with automatic transmission: the
transmission is in position
D, R or N.
R
DISTRONIC PLUS is deactivated.
Activating the HOLD function

Make sure that the activation conditions have
been fulfilled.

Depress the brake pedal.

Quickly continue depressing the brake until
display

appears in the multifunction dis-
play.
The HOLD function is switched on. You can
release the brake pedal.

If the HOLD function was not activated the
first time the brake pedal was depressed, wait
briefly and then try again.
Switching off the HOLD function
The HOLD function is deactivated when:

you depress the accelerator pedal and the
transmission is in position
D or R on vehicles
with an automatic transmission
R
you depress the brake pedal again with
enough pressure so that the
