18000 SERIVCE/MAINTENANCE MANUAL

Test batteries for 
weak cells.

Replace alternator.

Connect voltmeter between alternator 24-volt terminal and ground terminal.
Take reading with cab power ON and engine running. 

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Belt loose or broken; No input to alternator terminals; Damaged alternator; 

Corroded or loose battery connection; Battery is damaged.

CHECKS

Check fan drive belt and alternator belt for correct tension.

(See engine manual for belt specifications.)

Zero Volts DC

27.2 Volts DC or more

20.8 Volts DC or less

Tighten fan drive belt/alternator 
belt. Replace belt if worn.

Repair wiring or 
connections.
