Revision 1.9 Software 1.17
To unlock, just select “UNLOCK” by tapping on the side of your unit. You
will have to enter the unlock sequence. It is also “123” and you input it in the
same way as you input your PIN number. The screen will also remind you
how to perform the unlock sequence. The unlock sequence prevents random
unlocking of the unit – it is very improbable that random shakes will input
that sequence.
When a unit is put in “LOCK” mode, the scrollbar will turn
Red.
Once you
unlock, the scrollbar will turn back into green and you can proceed with your
use of the KAON.
This whole submenu is devoted to planning your dive – here you can set up your unit for Rec, Tec or
Gauge Mode diving, you can enter your gases, set up alarms and compute your No Deco Limit (NDL)
or you decompression ascent schedule. Your NDL or decompression schedule computations will match
what the KAON will display during your dive, provided you follow your dive plan precisely.
4. Dive Planning
The Kaon offers a 1-gas Rec mode and a 3-Gas Tec mode. Both models utilize the proven Buhlmann
model with ZH-L16C M-Values. There are differences between the two modes based on the intended
type of diving.
The 1-gas Rec mode is optimized for recreational diving: two or three dives completed in short
succession, with relatively short (30-60 min) surface intervals, and a primary goal of safely maximizing
the no-decompression time for each dive while appropriately penalizing the diver for short surface
intervals. This mode operates on the assumption that the diver does not wish to deliberately enter
decompression but provides a safe ascent procedure in the event the NDL is accidentally passed. This
model generally aligns with the PADI tables.
The 3-gas Tec mode is optimized for nitrox decompression diving: one or two dives completed in a
day, with a much longer (2-3 hour) surface interval, and a primary goal of offering safe decompression
schedules (with no regard for no decompression limits). It allows the user the freedom to choose from
one of three conservatism levels using Buhlmann with gradient factors (100/100, 30/85, 30/75). It
aligns with DecoPlanner and similar dive planning tools using the Buhlmann model with gradient
factors.
This menu item allows you to select between Rec, Tec or Gauge mode of operation. The default setting
is “Rec Mode”, and the default gas is “Air”.
4.1 Mode (Rec/Tec/Gauge)
Rec Mode
In Rec mode, the KAON functions as a one-gas computer. The default mix is Air. You can set any mix
from 21%-40% oxygen, including common mixes such as Air (21%), 32% nitrox or 36% nitrox.
