Lock out refers to specific practices and procedures that protect personnel from the unexpected starting of
machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during maintenance or repair activities.
Lock-out devices hold energy-isolation devices in a safe or off position and cannot be removed without a key
or other unlocking mechanism, or through extraordinary means, such as bolt cutters.
