Design and Function
ATTENTION:
You MUST ensure that the correct
Crankshaft Locking Tool is used for
the type of crankshaft sprocket fit-
ted.
• The crankshaft is turned clockwise to TDC po
sition,
• No.1 cylinder.
• The crankshaft gear is locked in timed position
using the Crankshaft Locking Tool applicable
to the type of crankshaft sprocket fitted to the
engine.
• The tool locates into the sprocket teeth and
at the same time into the hole in the oil seal
housing.
• The tool slides into the sprocket teeth from the
front face of the crankshaft sprocket. It cannot
locate correctly if only placed directly on to the
top of the teeth.
CAUTION:
The timing mark “arrow” on the Crank
shaft Locking Tools
MUST
align with
the timing mark on the crankshaft
sprocket. If the incorrect tool has been
selected, the timing marks will not align. Tempo
rarily remove the plastic knob off 25881 Tool to
improve visibility of the timing marks. The engine
must be positioned at TDC
BEFORE
the tool is
fitted. If the engine is turned passed the TDC po
sition, turn the crankshaft back ? turn and then
forward again to insert the tool.
Timing Belt Replacement
1.6, 1.8, 2.0 Engines with twin cams
Camshaft Locking Tools 3088-15 (yellow) and
3088-16 (blue)
NOTICE
These tools are colour-coded for
engine use identification.
Prior to model year 1999 the 1.8 16V
EcoTec engine was based on the 2.0 16V and
uses Locking Tool 308815 (yellow). From model
year 1999 the 1.8 16V is based on the 1.6 16V and
uses Locking Tool 308816 (blue). These tools are
inserted between the two camshaft sprockets, lo
cating firmly into the gear teeth of the sprockets.
This action locks the sprockets to prevent them
from turning out of their timed position, when
timing belt is removed. Camshaft timing marks
MUST align before inserting locking tool.
NOTICE
OPEL camshaft timing marks vary in
position according to the model of en
gine. For example, they can be at the
top (
3 A
), or centered (
3 B
). Check service infor
mation carefully.
