Troubleshooting
This section provides information to help you diagnose and solve various problems that may arise while
configuring or using your GE product and offers technical support contacts in case you need assistance. (See
Contacting us
on page 111.)
Identifying a dome
You can identify any digital dome if you can view the video output on a monitor. If you have a keypad
connected, press and hold the view key. The video will be overlaid with the dome’s data.
If you do not have a keypad, but can see the monitor, you can power cycle the dome. Shortly after the unit
powers up, a splash screen with the dome’s information is shown for a few seconds.
If a monitor is not available, or only a network connection exists to the dome, you can attempt the following
procedures to identify the dome.
Dome is configured, but IP address unknown
If you have basic information on the site’s configuration and know the range of addresses the dome in question
may be in, do the following:
1. On a Windows PC, click Start | Run, type CMD, and click OK to bring up a DOS prompt.
2. Determine the PC’s IP address and subnet by typing ipconfig at the DOS prompt.
Note:
For this example, we’ll use an IP address of 192.168.26.4, and a subnet of 255.255.255.0.
3. Clear the arp cache by typing arp -d, and pressing Enter at the DOS prompt.
4. At the DOS prompt, type ping 192.168.26.255. Some versions of the ping program report a list of all
respondents, but the default Windows program does not.
5. Unless you already have a list of respondents, type arp -a at the DOS prompt to display the arp cache.
This is a list of respondents to the ping command you did in step 4.
The list of addresses obtained are all devices on the local network. The unidentified dome is possibly one of
them. Cross check this list with the known domes on the network to find it. If after this, all addresses are
accounted for, and the dome is still unidentified, then perhaps it is not configured on the same subnet. You can
use the next procedure to recover your dome.
Note:
This procedure only works if the computer and the dome you are trying to connect to are on the same local subnet. This
procedure does not work if you are connected through a router or firewall to the remote network.
Configuration not complete or unknown
Follow the procedure to reset the dome to factory defaults in X to put the dome into factory default recovery
mode. In this mode, you can communicate with it on the default address of 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0.
Note:
This procedure only works if the computer and the dome you are trying to connect to are on the same local subnet. This
procedure does not work if you are connected through a router or firewall to the remote network. The reason is that the
default IP address is nonroutable.
