PARALLEL SYSTEMS
The essential purpose of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is to provide
emergency power to a load over a specific period of time when the input power
source, typically mains power, shows irregularities or fails. It is also used to improve
the mains power quality parameters. A combination of several UPS power systems
may be considered in order to achieve:
increased load capacity for a BATTERY power supply system (to multiply the total
power of the loads of critical importance being connected to the system), with a
so-called parallel system,
increased reliability (assured operation) of a power supply system, with a so-called
redundant system.
Such applications are also possible with the use of the POWERLINE GREEN 33
LITE range of UPS units. The choice of the optimum solution will be always
determined by the need to find the right balance between the required levels of
reliability, the cost of purchase and the operating costs.
The parallel redundant system (also known as active redundancy system), with the
(N+1) configuration
– where an additional UPS unit has been connected (and
operates) in parallel (
Fig. 18a
). This additional unit takes some of the load in the
system (partially reducing the load taken by the remaining UPS unit that would
normally handle the entire demand for power in the system). In case of failure of one
of the UPS power supply units, this unit becomes automatically disconnected
(
Fig. 18b
), with the remaining UPS units, including the redundant unit(s), taking up
the existing load without any interruption of supply. This ensures that the demand for
power continues to be fully met.
