2.2 System Description
The Digital Optical Repeater (DOR) is comprised of a Digital Access Unit (DAU) that is RF coupled to the Base
Station, and Digital Remote Unit (DRU) located in areas that the Base Station signal cannot reach (gaps created
by natural or manmade obstacles, tunnels and subways, or inside buildings) as well simulcast in a DAS
configuration to provide optimum coverage and capacity in wireless networks.
A Single optical fiber interface, based on the CPRI standard, is used to connect the DAU with a number of DRUs,
in a star, daisy-chain (see Figure 2-2), or hybrid star/daisy-chain configuration. The DRU’s can be installed 15km
to 40km away from the DAU. Both DAU and DRU contain a Digital Processing section and an RF Processing
section.
Figure 2-2 Dali DOR System Block Diagram
For bidirectional optical communication between DAU and DRUs over single single-mode fiber cable, SFP optical
transceivers with built in WDM system are used. SFP modules are supporting data rates from 2.5 Gbps to 6.144
Gbps (dependant on the version of the DOR).
All digital signal processing, (framer/deframer, serializer/deserializer, digital down and up conversion (DDC and
DUC), crest factor reduction (CFR) and digital pre-distortion (DPD)), is performed inside Xilinx V6 FPGA.
Unit monitoring and control functionality is provided by proprietary software application that runs on Linux OS
supported by an ARM9 microprocessor. Multi-thread operation and web server access are supported by the
system.
