Diagnostic Tools
SCSI Problems
Some common causes and solutions for SCSI device problems are listed in the following table.
Table 4-10
Solutions for SCSI Problems
Problem
Cause
Solution
System will not boot
from a SCSI drive.
The SCSI drive is not configured
correctly.
Make sure that drive cabling and jumpers are set
correctly. To boot a SCSI drive, the drive ID
number must be set to 0.
Network Problems
This section provides some common causes and solutions for network problems. The process of
debugging network cabling is not discussed.
Table 4-11
Solutions for Network Problems

Solution
System does not detect
a network controller.
1. Possible driver problem
2. Possible failed network
controller
1. Load latest version of Compaq Workstation Support
Software for Microsoft Windows NT.
2. Replace system board with tray.
Diagnostics reports a
failure.
1. The cable is not securely
connected.
2. The cable is attached to the
incorrect connector.
3. There is a problem with the
cable or a device at the other
end of the cable.
4. The network controller is
defective.
5. Network controller interrupt or
memory overlaps the interrupt
or memory of an expansion
board.
1. Be sure the cable is securely attached to the network
connector and that the other end of the cable is securely
attached to the correct device.
2. Be sure that the cable is attached to the correct
connector.
3. Be sure that the cable and device at the other end are
operating correctly.
4. Replace the controller or the system board with tray.
5. Run Computer Setup and modify the network controller
memory value.
Diagnostics passes, but
the system does not
communicate with the
network.
1. Network drivers are not
loaded, or driver parameters
do not match current
configuration.
2. The network controller is not
configured for the
workstation.
3. The network controller
interrupt or memory overlaps
the interrupt or memory of an
expansion board.
1. Make sure the network drivers are loaded and that the
driver parameters match the configuration of the network
controller.
2. Select the Network icon at the Control Panel.
Reconfigure the driver if necessary, using the Network
Setup found in the Control Center.
3. Run Computer Setup and modify the network controller
memory value.
