WHEELS AND TIRES
RIM AND WHEEL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
CAUTION
An inflated tir e and rim can be very dangerous. Many accid en ts,
so m e fatal, have resu lted from im proper handling and operation of truck
r im s and w h eels. It .is , th erefo re, of the utm ost im portance that the
p recau tion s outlined in th is sectio n be carefully noted by a ll p er so n s
concerned in order to avoid p erso n a l in ju ries and c o stly dam age.
HOW TO PREVENT RIM ACCIDENTS

DURING TIRE DEMOUNTING

If either rim or rin gs are damaged or ring
appears to be unseated, the tir e should be deflated
p r io r to rem oval of the tir e and rim assem b ly
from the veh icle.
F ir s t, reduce the p r e ssu r e by pushing the
plunger, then rem ove the en tire co re. Keep your
e y e s away fro m the valve.

DURING TIRE MOUNTING
R eplace Dam aged P a r ts
A buse during road operations or in mounting
the tir e can cause dents, crack s o r d istortion s which
weaken the p arts and p revent sa fe , proper a s s e m
bly.
BEFORE mounting a tir e and assem b lin g the
rim , in sp ect the rim p arts carefully for dam age,
ru st, and d istortion . Avoid the u se of r im s, locking
rin gs o r flan ges which a re out of shape, rusted,
o r broken. Avoid the u se of a ring or r im p arts of
d ifferent manufacture than the rim , o r of any dif
feren t s iz e or type than the rim .
Avoid the u se of any lubricant which contains
w ater o r solven t that is injurious to rubber. A com
bination lubricant and ru st-p reven tive compound is
p refera b le. T his p r o tectiv e m easu re is of particular
im portance with d rop -cen ter tu b ele ss r im s a s the
a ir in the tir e is contained by the t ir e - s id e rim
su r fa c e .
R em ove R ust and Other F oreign M atter
Accum ulation of such m aterial in the rim gut
te r can prevent the proper fitting of rin g s. P arts
that a re e x c e s s iv e ly corroded are weakened and
should be rep laced . U se of a rust preven tive com
pound (not containing water) during mounting w ill
m in im ize rusting.

tir e s and do not exceed recom m ended air p r e s s u r e s

ADDED PRECAUTION: R e-ch eck a sse m b lie s
just p rio r to inflation, p articu larly if they have
been ro lled a c r o s s the floor o r have re c e iv ed rough
handling betw een mounting and inflation.
R im Ring Seating (F ig. 20, V iew B)
MAKE CERTAIN the rim ring i s seated to the
fu ll depth of the groove, fits tightly a ll around, and
is s e c u r e ly locked. With certain types of w h eels,
how ever, it is n e c e ssa r y to se a t the rin gs w hile the
tir e is being inflated. In eith er c a s e BEFORE in
flating.

ATTACH A PORTABLE SAFETY DEVICE,OR
USE SAFETY CAGE. MADE ESPECIALLY FOR
THE PURPOSE. TO THE ASSEMBLY. T his p o rt
ab le device can be u sed w ith a ll typ es of w h eels
and r im s.
Or, if the a ssem b ly is not of the type which
req u ires inflation to sea t the rin g s, a SAFETY
CAGE can be u sed . T h is i s recom m ended to p r e
vent p erso n a l injury during inflation. An inflated
tir e contains potentially ex p lo siv e energy that can
blow rin gs lo o s e . A clip -o n type a ir chuck should
a lso be used , so that the operator can stand to one
sid e during tir e inflation.
