FRONT AXLE (F161)
REMOVAL
1. Safely support a x le, then rem ove hubs and
b earin gs a s directed under "FRONT HUBS AND
BEARINGS" (SEC. 3D).
2. R em ove tie rod from one or both steerin g
a rm s.
3. R em ove th ree sc r e w s and w ash ers which
attach kingpin dust cap to top of steerin g knuckle.
R em ove cap and cap gasket.
4. At bottom of kingpin, rem ove lock ring and
expansion plug. If plug cannot be readily rem oved,
it w ill com e out la te r when kingpin is driven from
knuckle.
5. U sing a su itab le drift, drive out the two
draw k eys by placing drift against sm a ll end of
each key.
NOTE: K eys w ere origin ally in sta lled from
opposite sid e s of cen ter.
6. With axle com ponents properly supported,
drive the kingpin downward using a b r a ss driving
bar or drift.
7. Rem ove knuckle, thrust bearing and spacing
sh im (s).
STEERING KNUCKLE INSTALLATION
1. Make su re that kingpin hole in axle cen ter
is clean and dry, then p osition and support knuckle
on the axle cen ter.
2. Slide the thrust bearing r a c e s and se a l
betw een axle cen ter and knuckle low er yoke.
3. P la c e a jack under the knuckle and r a ise
knuckle so that a ll clea ra n ce is taken up at thrust
bearing.
