TILT COjLUMN QUICK RELEASE
A "Release" and "lock" le v e r located at left
sid e of Column (fig s. 1 and 2) p erm its relocating
the position of colum n.
To reposition the column, r a ise le v e r to un
lock position; m ove colum n to d esired position,
then pus^ lev er down to lock column in sele c te d
p osition (jfig. 2).
The tilt column m echanism may be replaced
a s outlined in the 1970 Heavy Duty Truck S erv ice
Manual SIT135-70, under "Tilt Column Quick R e
lea se" onipage 9 -1 1 .

STEERING COLUMN AND SHAFT
The steer in g column upper shaft low er b ear
ing has been replaced with an im proved type as
shown in figure 3.
STEERING GEARS
On a ll ste erin g g ea rs covered in th is supple
ment w ill have the sid e cover attached to the main
housing with flange type cap s c r e w s.
On steer in g g e a rs 553DV and 555DV, the stub
end of the steerin g gear w orm shaft (fig. 4 ) w ill
have a c r o s s groove and a sectio n of the serra tio n s
m achined flat. With the steerin g gear centered,
the steerin g interm ediate shaft clam p yoke and
clam p bolt can only be in stalled one wav.
On ste erin g gear 568DV u sed on the RM80
m odel, the b r a ss fill pipe has been extended for
e a sie r fillin g .
STEERING TIE ROD
V eh icles covered in th is supplem ent have a
th r e e -p ie c e tie rod connecting left and right s t e e r
ing a r m s. The tie rod a ssem b ly (fig s. 5 and 7) con
s is t s of a tube and two sock et end a sse m b lie s.
Socket end a s s e m b lie s are threaded into tube and
locked in place with clam ps. Right- and left-hand
threads are provided to fa cilita te to e -in adjust
ment.
The tie rod ends are non-repairable and r e
quire lubrication a s sp ecifie d in LUBRICATION
(SEC. 0) and inspection to s e e that ball studs are
tight. Socket ends should be replaced when e x c e s s
iv e up and down motion or any lo st m otion or end
play at ball end of stud e x ists.
