Suspension
REAR SPRING SHACKLE PIN OR
BRACKET REPLACEMENT (Fig. 6)
R em oval
1. Jack up veh icle fram e until load is rem oved
from spring and block fram e se c u r e ly .
2. R em ove nuts and w a sh ers from clam p b olts,
then drive clamp b olts out of shackle.
3. R em ove lubrication fitting from end of
sh ack le pin. R em ove pin using slid e ham m er (J-
2619) and adapter (J-8118) a s shown in figure 4 on
page 4-27 of 1970 Heavy Duty Truck S ervice
Manual ST135-70.
4. To rem ove rear spring front bracket, r e
m ove radius rod a s d escrib ed in "Radius Rods" -
"Removal at Front End," la ter in this sec tio n .
5. R em ove bracket to fram e mounting bolts
and rem ove b racket.
INSTALLATION
1. R eplace any damaged or worn shackle pin
or bracket and bolt bracket to fram e. Torque bolts
to "Specifications" liste d at end of this sectio n .
2. Align spring eye with h oles in shackle so
bushing w ill not be damaged when pin is driven into
p la c e .
3. Insert pin in sh ackle, aligning grooves in
pin with clamp bolt h oles in sh ack le. D rive pin into
p la ce using soft ham m er.
4. In sert clamp b olts through h oles in sh ack le,
in sta ll w a sh ers and nuts, and torque to "Specifica
tio n s” lis te d at end of th is sectio n .
5. In stall lubrication fitting in end of pin.
L ubricate as d irected in LUBRICATION (SEC. 0),
then rem ove fram e b lock s and jacks.
REAR SPRING SHACKLE OR SHACKLE
BUSHING REPLACEMENT (F ig. 6)
Shackle R em oval
1. R em ove shackle pin a s p rev io u sly d irected
under "Rear Spring Shackle Pin or B racket R e
placem ent."
2. R em ove clamp bolt from shackle stud clam p
ring (nut), then u nscrew clam p ring from stud.
3. Slide shackle off stud, noting location of
spacing w a sh ers on one or both sid e s of shackle.
4. Inspect shackle stud fo r w ear or other
dam age. If n e c e ssa r y to rep lace stud, rem ove nut
and w ash er from inner end of stud, then drive stud
out of sh ack le bracket.
5. Inspect shackle for cra ck s or d istortion. If
shackle is not damaged, in sp ect bushing. If bushing
is worn e x c e ssiv e ly , rep la ce a s d irected .
