4.10 Wheel Hub Installation
4.10.1 Single Hub Nut System
1.
Tighten the nut to 200 ft-lbs (271 N-m).
2.
Spin the wheel at least one full revolution.
3.
Loosen the nut one full turn.
4.
Tighten the nut to 50 ft-lbs. (68 N-m).
5.
Loosen the nut 1/4 turn (90 degrees).
6.
Using a magnetic mounted dial indicator, adjust
the position of the indicator tip rests against the
end of the spindle. See Fig. 4-14. Ensure the
indicator rod is approximately parallel to the
spindle. Grasp the wheel-end assembly and push
and then pull the assembly while reading the dial
indicator.
Acceptable end play is 0.001”
(0.025mm) to 0.005” (0.13mm).
7.
Lock the nut in place by bending the appropriate
tag into the slot in the spindle. DO NOT rotate the
nut after the final loosening in step 5, as one
tang will always be aligned with the slot.
8.
Verify that the wheel rotates freely when adjustment is complete.
4.10.2 Double Hub Nut System
1.
Install and tighten the inner nut to 200 ft-lbs
(271 N-m).
2.
Spin the wheel at least one full revolution.
3.
Loosen the nut one full turn.
4.
Tighten the inner nut to 50 ft-lbs. (68 N-m).
5.
Loosen the nut 1/4 turn (90 degrees).
6.
Install the locking washer.
7.
Install the outer jam nut and tighten to 300 - 400 ft.lbs (407 - 542 N-m).
8.
Using a magnetic mounted dial indicator, adjust the position of the indicator tip rests against the
end of the spindle. See Fig. 4-14. Ensure the indicator rod is approximately parallel to the spindle.
Grasp the wheel-end assembly and push and then pull the assembly while reading the dial
indicator.
Acceptable end play is 0.001” (0.025mm) to 0.005” (0.13mm).
9.
Verify that the wheel rotates freely when adjustment is complete.
