4.8 Axle Alignment
Use the following procedures to check the alignment of trailer axles.
Notice. Carefully inspect all undercarriage components for any worn, broken or loose parts. Correct
any problems before going through the measuring procedure.
1.
Move the trailer forward and backward over a level floor, two or three times with the last
movement forward, to permit the suspension to become correctly aligned to center the front and
rear wheel tracks.
2.
Raise or lower the trailer into a level position.
3.
Remove the outer wheels or outer tires and rims.
4.
Attach a steel measuring tape to a hook and the hook over the kingpin. Measure the distance “A”
and “B” from the king pin to the ends of the forward axle. The difference between the “A” and “B”
measurements must not exceed 1/8” (3.2mm). See Fig. 4-8.
5.
Measure the distance “C” and “D” between the front and middle axle centers. The difference
between “C” and “D” measurements must not exceed 1/16” (1.6mm).
6.
Repeat Step 5 for the middle and rear axle.
Notice. The limits of 1/16” (1.6mm) and 1/8” (3.2mm) are the maximum limits for correct alignment of
the axles. These small limits make accurate measurements important.
