AIR COOLING
Approximately 20% to 25% of the air entering the combustion chamber is required to
burn the fuel, while the remaining air is used for engine cooling and thrust balance .
The cooling air is directed into the combustion liner, to prevent the flame from contacting
the liner wall, and to cooling air passages in the gas producer turbine support, the
turbine nozzles, and the first stage nozzle shield. Some of the high-pressure cooling
air is delivered to the thrust balance chamber at the forward face of the second stage
gas producer turbine rotor to offset forward pressure from combustion gas flow and
reduce loads on the No.8 thrust bearing.
