Each menu lists the names of the next level menus. By choosing an item
from the required list, the next level menu is selected. This new menu will
also list menu items which may select lower level menus, if any, and so on.
A menu may contain a mixed list of lower level menus and forms.
Menus consist of one or more pieces of static or dynamic information.
Static information never changes, for example menu items that point to
other menus which are always available. Dynamic information changes or
is changed, for example a list of ports that increases as more option cards
are fitted.
Forms are found at the bottom of the menu tree, and are used to display and
edit system information. Forms provide the user with one or more pages of
information which contain static (fixed) and dynamic (changing)
information, as well as fields that can be edited.
Items or fields on a form can contain free format ("unconstrained") text or a
fixed format ("constrained") list. Free format text is any text the user wants
to enter, although most free format text fields will check any text input by
using certain rules, e.g. only digits will be accepted in a numeric field.
A "constrained" field has a limited number of values that are held in the
system as a list from which the user can select a value. A good example of
such a list is the compression options which the Marlin Bridge can support,
where DISABLED, ENABLED and FAST are allowed, but SLOW is not!
How the menus and forms are selected and displayed depends on whether
the front panel or a terminal is being used. Both interfaces are described
below.
