HOW TO FIND THE CAUSES OF IMPROPER WORKING AND HOW TO RECTIFY THEM
TYPE OF IRREGULARITY
POSSIBLE CAUSE
SOLUTION
Burner does not start.
(the appliance does not perform the
ignition program)
1) Thermostats (boiler/room) or pressure
switches open
2) Photoresistant-cell in short circuit
3) No voltage with an open isolating switch or
with a tripped max. contactor switch or line
voltage failure
4) Thermostat line not wired according to dia-
gram or open thermostats
5) Failure inside the control-box
1) Increase their value or wait until they activate
due to natural reduction of the temperature
or pressure
2) Replace it
3) Activate switches or wait for power to return
4) Check connections and thermostats
5) Replace it
Defective flame with sparks.
1) Atomizing pressure too low
2) Too much combustion air
3) Dirty or worn nozzle
4) Water in the fuel
1) Reset at proper value
2) Reduce combustion air flow
3) Clean or replace it
4) Remove it from the tank using a suitable pump.
(Never use the burner pump for this job)
Flame badly shaped with smoke and
soot.
1) Insufficient combustion air flow
2) Dirty or worn nozzle
3) Combustion chamber unsuitably designed
or too small
4) Nozzle capacity too low with respect to com-
bustion chamber volume
5) Unsuitable refractory coating (excessive
reduction in gap for flame)
6) Boiler or chimney ducts clogged
7) Atomization pressure low
1) Increase combustion air
2) Clean or replace it
3) Reduce the nozzle delivery rate to suit the
combustion chamber capacity (obviously the
thermal power will be lower than the required
one) or replace the boiler
4) Replace the nozzle, increasing its capacity
5) Modify ensuring that the instructions of the
boiler manufacturer are carefully followed
6) Clean them
7) Raise pressure to the prescribed value
Defective pulsating escaping flame or
receding from the combustion orifice.
1) Excessive draft (only if
there is a suction unit to the chimney)
2) Dirty or worn nozzle
3) Water in the fuel
4) Dirty disk
5) Excess combustion air
6) Air passage between disk and blast tube
1) Adjust the suction fan speed by changing the
pulley diameter
2) Clean or replace it
3) Remove it from the tank with a suitable pump
(never use the burner pump for this job)
4) Clean it
5) Reduce combustion air
6) Rectify the position of the blast tube.
Corrosion inside the boiler.
1) Boiler operating temperature too low (lower
than the dew point)
2) High sulphur content in the fuel Smoke tem-
perature too low (below 130 °C).
1) Increase the operating temperature
2) Change grade of fuel if the boiler allows it.
Soot at the chimney exit.
1) Excessive cooling (below 130°C) of smoke
before exit outflow, for an outside chimney not
adequately heat insulated or cold air infiltration
1) Improve insulation and close any gap letting
cold air in.
