Preventive Maintenance
Electrical System
Batteries and Cables
Figure 37
• Load test the batteries (Figure 37).
• Inspect the batteries for secure mounting,
cracks, and corroded terminals.
• Check the specific gravity of maintenance-
type batteries.
• Check cables for wear and ensure
connections are clean, tight and free of
corrosion.
• Ensure that the wiring is properly routed
and securely clamped.
• Clean and seal the terminals on the battery
disconnect switch, if equipped, in the same
manner as the battery terminals.
Starter
• Perform current draw test. See the
appropriate engine service documentation
for procedure and specifications.
• Inspect the starter to verify secure
mounting, and inspect for cracks around the
mounting flanges (Figure 38).
Figure 38
Alternator
• Test the alternator as follows:
• Remove the surface charge — connect a
carbon pile and load the batteries at 25%
of their total CCA rating for 15 seconds.
Or, turn the headlights on high beam for
two to three minutes per battery. Allow the
batteries to recover for 30 seconds, then
check the voltage using a voltmeter. If the
reading is less than 12.40 volts, charge or
replace the batteries before proceeding.
Voltage Output Test
• Connect a DC voltmeter to the positive and
negative output terminals at the alternator.
Measure the voltage at the batteries. The
reading must be within 1.0 volts of the
reading taken at the alternator. Correct any
problems before proceeding.
• Start engine and increase speed to 1500
rpm: The volt meter should now indicate
alternator output voltage has increased to a
range from 13.8 volts to 14.2 volts.
If voltage increases, but is out of range,
inspect to see if alternator has an
adjustable regulator. If so: reduce engine
speed to idle. Adjust voltage to a setting of
14.0 volts.
• If voltage is higher than 14.7 volts and
cannot be adjusted below 14.25 volts, or if
voltage is lower than 13.8 volts and cannot
be adjusted into range; replace alternator.
• If within range, perform Current Output Test.
