Preventive Maintenance
13. Turn the engine OFF and verify that
coolant is visible in the sight glass on
the coolant reservoir and add coolant, if
necessary, to bring it back to the FULL
level.
14. Install the pressure cap.
15. Operate the engine at normal operating
temperatures, at least 185°F (85°C), for
one to one and one-half hours.
16. Turn the engine OFF and allow to cool
to 122°F (50°C), and drain the cooling
system.
WARNING
Do not remove the pressure cap from
a hot engine. Wait until the coolant
temperature is below 120°F (50°C) before
removing the pressure cap. Heated
coolant spray or steam can cause
personal injury.
17. Remove the pressure cap.
18. Fill the cooling system with plain water
until coolant is visible in the sight glass on
the coolant reservoir.
19. Open all coolant flow valves to the heater,
if equipped.
WARNING
Do not stand near the surge tank or
radiator while operating the engine with
the pressure cap off.
20. Wait two to three minutes, without starting
the engine, to allow the coolant level to
stabilize.
21. Add plain water to bring the level back to
FULL.
22. Turn the HVAC temperature control knob
fully clockwise to select maximum heat
allowing maximum coolant flow through
the heater core. The blower motor must
be turned ON to activate the water control
valve.
23. With the pressure cap off:
- Operate the engine at LOW idle for two
minutes.
- Turn engine OFF and add plain water to
bring the level back to FULL.
24. With the pressure cap off:
- Operate the engine at LOW idle for one
minute to allow adequate oil pressure to
build throughout the engine.
- Operate the engine at HIGH idle until the
thermostat opens.
25. Continue to operate the engine at HIGH
idle for five minutes with the coolant
temperature above 185°F (85°C).
26. Allow the engine to idle for two minutes
before shutting it down. This allows
adequate cool down of pistons, cylinders,
bearings, and turbocharger components.
WARNING
Do not remove the pressure cap from
a hot engine. Wait until the coolant
temperature is below 120°F (50°C) before
removing the pressure cap. Heated
coolant spray or steam can cause
personal injury.
27. Turn engine OFF and allow to cool to
122°F (50°C), and drain the cooling
system. If the water being drained is still
dirty, the system must be flushed again,
until the drained water is clean.
Fill the System
1. Disconnect the electrical connection for
the EGR valve.
Note: Monitor the coolant temperature
with INSITE™ electronic service tool. If
the thermostat does not open before the
coolant temperature reaches 195° F (90° C),
discontinue the fill operation, inspect the
thermostat, and replace it if necessary.
