CAUTION
NEVER exceed the manufacturer’s
recommended maximum engine speed. If
the oil pressure gauge indicates a sudden
drop in oil pressure, stop the engine
immediately. Failure to follow these
guidelines may result in major engine
damage.
• Check the engine controls and
performance.
• Using the dash tachometer, check and
record high and low engine idle speed (rpm)
(Figure 32) .

oil pressure .

• Check the engine for excessive smoke,
surging, misfiring and noise indicating a
malfunction.
• Verify that the parking brake operates
properly .
• While in motion, apply the brakes to check
for even lockup and release. Check the
ABS system, if equipped.
• Allow the transmission to shift through
all gears and check smooth operation.
Check the gear pattern, making sure the
transmission shifts gears sequentially and
smoothly.
• Listen for unusual noises. Make sure that
the vehicle is riding smoothly, free from
roughness or excessive vibration.
• Ensure that there is no excessive play
in the steering wheel. Turning operation
should be smooth and free of rough spots.
Check for vibration in the steering wheel or
column.
