Preventive Maintenance
NOTICE
The cooling system must be filled slowly
to prevent airlocks. During filling, air
must be vented from the engine coolant
passages. Wait two to three minutes to
allow air to be vented, then add mixture to
bring the level to the top.
NOTICE
Do not allow the engine speed to
exceed 2,000 rpm while the EGR valve is
disconnected. Operation at higher rpm in
this mode can result in engine damage.
Low silicate antifreeze must be mixed with
quality water at a 50/50 ratio (40 to 60 percent
working range). A 50/50 mixture of antifreeze
and water gives a -33°F (-36°C) freeze point
and a boiling point of 228°F (109°C).
The actual lowest freeze point of ethylene
glycol antifreezes is at 68 percent, The use of
higher concentrations of antifreeze will raise
the freeze point of the solution and increase
the possibility of a silicate gel problem.
7. Remove the pressure cap. Fill the
cooling system until coolant is visible in
the sight glass on the coolant reservoir
with a mixture of 50 percent water and
50 percent ethylene glycol or propylene
glycol antifreeze.
8. Open all coolant flow valves to the heater,
if equipped.
9. Wait two to three minutes, without starting
the engine, to allow the coolant level to
stabilize. Add a 50/50 mixture to bring the
coolant level back to FULL.
10. Turn the HVAC temperature control knob
fully clockwise to select maximum heat
allowing maximum coolant flow through
the heater core. The blower motor must
be turned ON to activate the water control
valve.
WARNING
Do not stand near the surge tank or
radiator while operating the engine with
the pressure cap off. If the vehicle is
equipped with a fill door on the side of
the surge tank, keep it closed.
11. With the pressure cap off:
- Operate the engine at LOW idle for two
minutes.
- Turn engine OFF and add coolant to
bring the level back to FULL, using a
50/50 mixture.
12. With the pressure cap off:
- Operate the engine at LOW idle for one
minute to allow adequate oil pressure to
build throughout the engine.
- Operate the engine at HIGH idle until the
thermostat opens.
Note: Monitor the coolant temperature
with INSITE™ electronic service tool. If
the thermostat does not open before the
coolant temperature reaches 90° C [195°F],
discontinue the flush operation, inspect the
thermostat, and replace it if necessary.
13. Allow the engine to idle for two minutes
before shutting it down. This allows
adequate cool down of pistons, cylinders,
bearings, and turbocharger components.
14. Turn the engine OFF and verify that
coolant is visible in the sight glass on
the coolant reservoir and add coolant, if
necessary, to bring it back to the FULL
level.
