9.2. Record a pattern
As you proceed through this section, keep in mind the features we covered in the
chapter, such as
,
, and
. These features can all be used as you create your patterns.
9.2.1. Basic concepts of recording in real time
There's a brief
introduction to real-time recording [p.19]
in the
chapter. We'll
just cover the basic concepts here and get into the full details in the chapter on
.
Real-time recording is activated by holding the Record button and pressing Play. Another
method is to hold the Shift button and press Record. Either way, the Record button will turn
blue to indicate that real-time recording is taking place. If you'd like to hear the metronome,
hold Shift and press the Sync button.
♪
: You can
transpose the octave range [p.100]
of the pads to record notes that are higher or lower.
Here are some important things to know about real-time recording:
• Real-time recording always controls the first two tracks (Pitch and Gate). Both
are recorded simultaneously.
• When a note is played, it is quantized to the nearest step dictated by the Time
Division setting for the pattern.
• There is a quantize window for recorded notes. If you play a note 50% of the
Time Division prior to a step (or closer), it will be recorded into the next step, not
the current one.
• When the Velo track is set to its default type of Velocity, the velocity of the note
is recorded as well.
• When the Press track is set to its default type of Pressure, the pressure value is
recorded as well.
• Press Record again to exit Record mode. The pattern will keep looping.
• To re-enter Real-time record mode while the pattern is looping, hold the Shift
button and press Record.
• To enter Step mode while the pattern is looping, press Record twice. The first
press will exit Record mode and the second will enter Step mode.
• If you are done recording and don't need to hear the pattern loop again, press
Stop to exit Record mode.
♪
: It is not possible to do real-time recording on the Mod 1 / Mod 2 tracks if the
is set to
anything other than Velo (Mod 1) or Pressure (Mod 2).
9.2.1.1. Record multiple patterns
There's no need to press the Stop button and load an empty pattern in order to record a new
idea or a passage that is related to the first pattern. You can load in a different pattern while
the Sequencer is still recording in real time.
