UPS Configuration
Introduction
Businesses’ needs for rapid information retrieval are growing rapidly these days. With
tremendous increases in the processing and memory power the gap between the CPU and
I/O processing speeds has become a primary bottle-neck in this process. In order to
provide tolerable application performances, the storage administrator typically enables
read and write caching at various levels of the storage stack. However enable write
caching comes with a catch. The data in the write-back cache being not persistent, any
power failure in the storage system will result in the loss of valuable data. In order to
circumvent this problem the administrator must use a UPS to protect the system from
abrupt power failures. However, for systems in demographics where the failures are
frequent and long, the presence of UPS may still be not enough. StorTrends iTX line of
software provides the answer for this scenario. StorTrends iTX software comes with
several distinguishable features in our stack that many of the other storage servers lack.
Intelligent UPS support is one of them. This document explores how UPS can be
integrated with StorTrends iTX stack and how it enables the user to protect valuable user
data.
StorTrends - UPS Integration
StorTrends iTX software supports APC and Powerware UPS models as well as UPS with
USB HID support. In order to fully benefit from StorTrends iTX software’s integrated
UPS support, all the power connectors UPS-controlled iTX nodes must be connected to
the central UPS. Further, one of the nodes must be either connected to the UPS either
through its serial COM ports or USB ports depending on the type of UPS connected. This
node must be then configured to be the Master node using the UPS configuration page in
ManageTrends, the StorTrends iTX software’s integrated web-based management utility.
