PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
1.1 TYPES OF PRODUCT
This manual refers to the following series of Alfa
Laval condensers: CDEW, CPLUS, CFC, CRS,
ACFL, CFC/M, CFL/M, ACFC/M and ACFL/M.
The exchangers are manufactured in a con-
denser version or desuperheater version.
Fig. 1
enclosed shows an example of a CDEW
series condenser with its main components. For
further technical information, please refer to the
"Alfa Laval Condensers Catalogue"
CONDENSER.
The refrigerant condenses on the
outside of the tubing when flowing through the
tube bundle, while the liquid is heated inside the
tubing. The condensate is collected at the bottom
of the shell and is partially sub-cooled before
leaving.
DESUPERHEATER, VERSION HR (PARTIAL
RECOVERY).
The exchanger is used only to
heat water, subtracting heat from the refrigerant
that passes through the shell side in the gaseous
phase and is not condensed.
RECOVERY UNIT, VERSION HRC (TOTAL
HEAT RECOVERY).
This solution involves two
independent water circuits inside the same
exchanger. This configuration is used for opera-
tion alternatively as a condenser or for total con-
densing heat recovery.
1.2 COMPATIBLE FLUIDS
The units are designed in accordance with the
pressure and temperature limits shown in the "Alfa
Laval Condensers Catalogue" and on the rating
plate on the exchanger, see
Fig. 2
and
Fig. 3
.
REFRIGERANT SIDE.
The condensers have
been designed for use with HCFC and HFC
refrigerants. The allowed fluids belong to Group 2
as per art. 9 of EC Directive 97/23. Applications
that involve the use of Group 1 hydrocarbons as
per the same Directive will only be provided upon
specific request.
WATER SIDE.
The fluid used is generally fresh
water for the CDEW, CPLUS, CFC, CRS, ACFL
series condensers, and salt water for the CFC/M,
CFL/M, ACFC/M and ACFL/M series condens-
ers. The application may involve the use of water
with the addition of antifreeze fluid (for example,
ethylene or propylene glycol).
1.3 KEY TO THE RATING PLATE
• Manufacturer: name and address of the manu-
facturer
• Model: description of the model
• Serial number: number identifying the unit
• Date: date of manufacture
• Stamp: mark of the approval body
• Side Tubes: inner tube side
• Side shell: shell side
• Fluid: fluid group in accordance with EC Direc-
tive 97/23
• PS: maximum allowable pressure
• PT: test pressure
• TS: maximum allowable temperature
1.4 COMPONENTS AND PRODUCT
IDENTIFICATION
Each condenser is identified by a serial number
shown on the metal rating plate fitted to the unit
(marked as SERIAL N.). Always refer to this
number in all communications to Alfa Laval
regarding the unit purchased, in order to ensure
correct and prompt product identification.

INSTALLING THE CONDENSER
Below are a number of recommendations that
must be observed both before and during the
installation of the product. The units must be
installed only by qualified personnel, who must in
any case strictly observe the general safety
standards in force according to local require-
ments.
2.1 RECEIPT AND INSPECTION OF THE
PRODUCT
Make sure that the exchanger corresponds to the
type ordered; to do this, cross-check the details
on the order confirmation, the DDT (delivery
note) and the rating plate on the exchanger.
Make sure that all the components have been
delivered and that they have not been damaged
during transport. In the event of damage to the
units or missing components, a written claim
must be sent to the carrier.
2.2 STORING THE PRODUCT
Before installation, the condensers must be
stored in a dry, sheltered place, at temperatures
no lower than +5°C. Avoid sites where conden-
sate may form inside the exchanger due to tem-
perature variations during the day (for example,
exposure to sunlight).
2.3 HANDLING AND POSITIONING THE
EXCHANGER
The units can be handled using elastic hoisting
straps positioned at the sides of the exchanger;
some models are also fitted with slots for hoist-
ing.
Fig. 4
shows an example of how to lift the
exchanger. The units must be installed horizon-
tally and fastened to supports, brackets or longi-
tudinal members. Non-horizontal installation may
considerably affect performance. In the case of
installation on boats, the condenser will be fitted
with two refrigerant outlets, which must both be
connected to ensure the discharge of the con-
