Chapter 4
Upgrading Software
Acopia software is distributed in
release files
, typically named with a .rel extension
(for example, “initial.rel” or “acopia-0.5.0_dev.rel”). To upgrade software on the
ARX, you must
1. clear space for a new release file (if necessary),
2. copy a new release file to the switch,
3. arm the switch with the release file, and
4. reboot all modules in the switch.
This chapter describes this process in detail, then describes the high-level process for
upgrading software in a redundant pair of switches.
Before You Begin
Before performing a software upgrade, we recommend that you back up your current
configuration. Use the
copy startup-config
command to back up both the
running-config and global-config parameters. See
“Saving Both Configs” on
page 3-16
for detailed instructions.
If you are upgrading a redundant pair, you only need to copy the running-config off of
the Backup peer (or, if they are both Active, the peer that you choose to upgrade first).
This is because of the process for upgrading a redundant pair: experiment with the
new software on the Backup switch, decide whether or not to keep it, then upgrade the
other switch. If you decide
not
to keep the new software, you need to downgrade the
Backup switch only; at this point, the Backup switch needs its old running-config. All
steps for upgrading a redundant pair appear later in the chapter. Use
copy
running-config
to save the running-config.
