Der erste Oszillator
Bisher haben wir uns ausschließlich mit klangbearbeitenden Funktionen befasst und sind dabei
stets vom selben Ausgangsmaterial ausgegangen: einer sogenannten Sägezahnwelle (eng.: saw-
tooth wave). Diese Wellenform ist als neutrales Ausgangsmaterial besonders gut geeignet, da sie
alle Obertöne der sogenannten Natürlichen Obertonreihe enthält, so dass die Filter gute Angriffs-
möglichkeiten erhalten.
Die Filter (Ausnahme: das Kerbfilter oder Bandstop BS) beschneiden jedoch das Klangspektrum
stets an den Enden, so dass das Signal beispielsweise dumpfer klingt, nachdem es durch ein Tief-
passfilter geführt wurde. Nun können Sie sich sicherlich vorstellen, dass derlei Eingriffe zwar wes-
entlich sind, allein jedoch nicht ausreichen, um eine Klangfarbe zu gestalten. Schließlich verfügen
beispielsweise eine Trompete und ein Saxofon über deutlich unterschiedliche Klangfarben, obwohl
niemand behaupten würde, das eine Instrument sei auffallend dumpfer als das andere. Es muss
also eine Möglichkeit geschaffen werden, die Klangfarbe auch innerhalb des durchgelassenen
Bereichs zu bestimmen. Zudem muss auch die Tonhöhe des Signals festgelegt werden.
Beide Aufgaben kommen in einem Synthesizer den Oszillatoren zu. Sie schwingen mit wähl- und
modulierbarer Tonhöhe und sind zudem in der Lage, unterschiedliche Wellenformen und somit
unterschiedliche Ausgangsspektren für die anschließende Filterung zu erzeugen.
Der Virus besitzt zwei Hauptoszillatoren und einen sogenannten Suboszillator. Wir werden uns
zunächst jedoch mit dem Oszillator 1 befassen, denn den haben Sie bei unseren bisherigen Experi-
menten stets gehört.
Rufen Sie für die nächsten Versuche bitte erneut den Grundklang (A127 – START -) auf, von dem wir
anfangs ausgegangen sind. Verändern Sie ihn ruhig, um eine angenehmere Lautstärkehüllkurve zu
erzielen, halten Sie sich aber mit Filter- und Saturation-Eingriffen zurück, damit Sie das Oszillator-
signal möglichst unbeeinflusst hören können.
Lokalisieren Sie im Bereich OSCILLATORS den links abgetrennten Bereich "1". Sie finden dort die
beiden Regler SHAPE und WAVE SEL/PW. Diese Regler ermöglichen es, die Wellenform und damit
das Klangspektrum des Oszillator 1 zu bestimmen. Im Klangprogramm ist für SHAPE die Mittelstel-
lung (Wert 64) abgelegt, die am Regler durch die grafische Repräsentation einer Sägezahnwelle
markiert ist. (Die Grafik veranschaulicht übrigens sehr deutlich, warum die Wellenform “Sägezahn”
heißt).
Drehen Sie den Regler nun bei gehaltener Note langsam nach rechts und hören Sie dabei, wie die
Klangfarbe zum Rechtsanschlag hin zunehmend “hohler” klingt. Der Effekt lässt sich annäherungs-
weise als ein “Ausdünnen” der Klangfarbe beschreiben, in jedem Falle aber als etwas, das die
Klangfarbe über das gesamte Spektrum hinweg gleichmäßig betrifft und daher durch Filter nicht zu
erzielen wäre.
