Stellen Sie nun für ein weiteres Experiment die Lautstärkehüllkurve wieder so ein, dass Sie während
gehaltener Noten einen stetigen Pegel hören und deaktivieren Sie die Filterhüllkurve, indem Sie ENV
AMOUNT auf 0 setzen. Stellen Sie nun das Filter 1 auf Tiefpassbetrieb und senken Sie die Filterfre-
quenz so weit herab, dass Sie bei Noten mittlerer Tonlage gerade eben noch ein dumpfes Signal
hören.
Spielen sie nun tiefere und höhere Noten. Sie werden feststellen, dass tiefere Noten nun obertonre-
icher wirken, während höhere Noten zunehmend dumpfer und leiser werden, um schließlich gän-
zlich unhörbar zu werden. Möglicherweise ahnen Sie bereits die Erklärung: Durch die
Abwärtstransponierung der Töne liegen zunehmend mehr Klanganteile (sogenannte Teiltöne) des
Signals unterhalb der Filterfrequenz, während bei Aufwärtstransponierung immer mehr Teiltöne jen-
seits der Filterfrequenz liegen und somit unterdrückt werden, bis schließlich auch der Grundton und
damit der letzte Klanganteil verschwindet.
Um diesen Effekt zu vermeiden – oder auch bei Bedarf zu verstärken -, besteht die Möglichkeit, die
Filterfrequenz über die Tonhöhe der Note bzw. über die Notennummer zu beeinflussen. Den Grad
dieser Beeinflussung bestimmt man durch den Regler KEY FOLLOW.
Beachten Sie bitte, dass KEY FOLLOW ein sogenannter bipolarer Parameter ist: Sein Regelbereich
erstreckt sich nicht von 0 bis zu einem Maximum (127), sondern vom negativen Maximum (-64) über
0 bis hin zum positiven Maximum (+63). Befindet sich der Regler also in Mittelstellung (0), so übt die
Tonhöhe bzw. die Tastatur keinerlei Wirkung auf die Filterfrequenz aus. Dreht man den KEY FOL-
LOW allerdings nach rechts in seinen positiven Wertebereich, so wird man feststellen, dass sich das
Filter bei hohen Tönen zunehmend weiter öffnet, bei tiefen Tönen jedoch weiter schließt. Bewegt
man den Regler nach links in den negativen Bereich, so ist dieser KEY-FOLLOW-Effekt genau
umgekehrt. Dieser Form der Intensitätseingabe über einen bipolaren Parameter wird Ihnen beim
Virus in Verbindung mit anderen Modulationsquellen und -empfängern wiederbegegnen.
Experimentieren Sie nun mit verschiedenen KEY FOLLOW-Einstellungen und stimmen Sie die Ein-
stellungen dabei stets mit CUTOFF ab. Ziehen Sie anschließend auch die anderen Parameter hinzu,
die Sie bereits kennengelernt haben.
Die Saturationsstufe
Dem Filter 1 ist im Virus eine Sättigungsstufe nachgeschaltet, die es ermöglicht, dem gefilterten
Signal durch Verzerrungen neue Obertöne hinzuzufügen.
