Even if you wish to use SNMP management, you must first connect a
terminal to the serial port, set the VN/bridge configuration, and per
bridge IP address and subnet mask.
Simple Network
Management
Protocol (SNMP)
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is the standard
management protocol for multi-vendor IP networks. Supporting
transaction-based queries, SNMP formats messages and transmits
information between reporting devices and data-collection programs. It
runs on top of the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), offering a
connectionless-mode service. This allows SNMP to pass management
information before a session is established.
The 7600 Card can be managed through SNMP-based external network
management applications running on a workstation. Transcend
Enterprise Manager, a network management application from 3Com,
manages 7600 Cards by graphically displaying the network. This
graphical interface makes it easier to manage large networks (see
Figure 14-3).
