Functional description
Principle of Nd:YAG laser treatment
The VISULAS YAG III is an ophthalmic therapy laser system for non-contact
incision of ocular tissue.
The radiation is generated by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which emits pulses
of typically < 4 ns duration and a maximum energy of approximately 10 mJ
at a wavelength of 1,064 nm. At the focus of the laser beam, a plasma is
created which is at a high pressure and temperature, but is spatially
confined. This phenomenon is termed optical breakdown or
photodisruption. The plasma expands, thereby cooling rapidly, such that
there is no thermal effect on the tissue.
However, the mechanical stress due to the shock wave accompanying the
expansion of the plasma results in an incisional effect.
