Removal (Engine Code AEG)
1. Remove engine cover and undercover on right side. Remove accessory drive belt and tensioner. Set
piston No. 1 to TDC. Remove coolant expansion tank and place to side. (hoses remain connected).
Pull off vacuum pipes at EVAP canister and at throttle valve housing (Beetle). Remove upper timing
belt cover. See
Fig. 26
. Support engine. Install (10-222A Support with Legs 10-222A/8) and remove
front engine mount.
2. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove center and lower timing belt covers. Raise engine slightly.
CAUTION:
To prevent valves from contacting piston, DO NOT rotate camshaft or
crankshaft with timing belt removed. Valve damage may result.
NOTE:
The "AEG" Engine Code is for the 1998 model year Beetle.
NOTE:
If testing vehicle timing belt tension as an inspection, manufacturer
recommends tensioning timing belt with engine warm to the touch. If engine
is hot, allow to cool down.
