Hydrostatic Drive Transmission Removal (continued)
15. Loosen (do not remove) the 4 (1/2 inch) hydrostatic transaxle mount bolts
securing the hydrostatic transaxle to the chassis.
16. While supporting the hydrostatic transaxle being removed, remove the 4
loosened mount bolts from the chassis. Remove the hydrostatic transaxle
from the machine.
Hydrostatic Drive Transmission Installation
1. Place the hydrostatic transaxle into the machine. While supporting the
hydrostatic transaxle being installed, install and finger tighten the 4 chassis
mount bolts.
2. Tighten the 4 (1/2 inch) hydrostatic transaxle mount bolts securing the
hydrostatic transaxle to the chassis. Torque bolts to 129–155 N •m (95–115
ft-lb).
3. Install the spring clamps securing the reservoir hose to the hydrostatic
transaxle.
4. Install the cartridge filter.
5. Install the 5/16 inch nut and shoulder bolt securing motion control link to the
hydrostatic transaxle. Torque to 2.3–2.8 N•m (20–25 in-lb).
6. Install the break rod to the hydrostatic transaxle. Install the locking cotter pin
securing the brake rod to the hydrostatic transaxle.
7. Install the hydro plate. Install the 8 (3/8 inch) (4 per side) locks nuts and bolts
securing the hydro plate to the chassis.
8. ZT 5400 only, install the 2 brake return springs connecting the brake rod to
the hydro plate.
9. Set the parking brake.
10. Install the wheel to the side being serviced.
11. Install the drive belt to the idler pulley. Using a ½ inch breaker bar, insert into
the most accessible square hole of the idler arm. Turn the breaker bar to
add belt tension.

13. Using an appropriate lifting device, lower the rear of the machine and support.
