Bleeding Air from the Cooling
System for Units with Coolant
Expansion Tank and Overflow Bottle
(Starting 10/16)
The cooling system in T-Series Truck Units has
been updated. Production units started using the
updated cooling system in October of 2016.
The updates make it easier to bleed the air from
the cooling system and reduce the chance the
engine will overheat because of air in the cooling
system.
•
A new expansion tank and a separate overflow
bottle are used to replace the old tank that
contained both the expansion and overflow
components.
•
The expansion tank cap is a bayonet style
rated at 10 psig (69 kPa).
•
New coolant level switch, inserted into a dry
well and surrounded by a magnetic float.
•
The upper engine to radiator inlet hose, engine
to bypass tee hose, and engine to expansion
tank upper hose have been replaced with new
hoses.
The cooling system capacities have increased and
are listed below.
Checking Coolant Level
•
During the pretrip checks: check the coolant
level in the overflow bottle. It should be above
the Full Cold line.
•
If necessary, add coolant to the overflow
bottle.
•
During Service, check the coolant level in the
expansion tank. It should be at the bottom of
the filler neck.
Standard Fill Procedure
1. Visually inspect upper radiator hose to verify
the engine side of the hose is higher than or
level with the radiator inlet end of the hose.
No part of the hose should be lower than the
radiator inlet (See illustration below). Loosen
clamps and adjust hose as needed. Make sure
to leave at least 3/8'' clearance between the
hose and the block-off panel to prevent
rubbing.
