Clutch Inspection
It is possible for a defective clutch to damage the
crankshaft and main bearings in the engine on a
Model 50 Unit during Electric Standby operation.
This can cause the unit to record Alarm Code 19
(Low Engine Oil Pressure) during Engine
operation. Engine teardowns on some of these
engines have shown that Crankshaft and Main
Bearings had undergone “Fretting”, which
resulted from loss of oil in the bearings during
electric standby operation.
Fretting is special wear process that occurs at the
contact area between two materials that are under
load and subject to minute relative motion by
vibration or some other force.
All Model 50 Self Powered Truck Units that have
recorded Alarm Code 19 (Low Engine Oil
Pressure) and have had an engine failure whether
IN or OUT of warranty should be checked as
follows:
1. Check and adjust the Engine/Electric Motor
Belt Tension.
2. Check and adjust the Electric
Motor/Compressor Belt Tension.
3. Check and adjust the Engine Restraining
Mount (Snubber).
4. Check the Condition of Belts – They must be
TK recommended or the equivalent and in
good condition (see “Check Condition of
Belts” below).
5. Check the Clutch (see “Check the Clutch”
below).
Check Condition of Belts
1. Check to make sure that the belts are TK
recommended or the equivalent. If not, the
belt or belts must be replaced.
2. Use a Continental Elite Gauge to check the
condition of the Engine/Electric Motor Belt.
3. Contact the Thermo King Service Department
if you cannot find a supplier for the
Continental Elite Gauge.

Excessive Rust on Clutch – Will cause
resistance at pivot points on linkages for shoes.
Gap between shoe and pulley almost
nonexistent compared to new clutch. Shoes
must not be worn down to metal.
