Figure 176: Increase Coverage On Condenser Coil
If Necessary
j.
With the flow through the radiator now
maximized, repeat Steps 2d thru 2f.
k. Continue running the coolant loop under
these conditions until the coolant is free of
all entrained and/or entrapped air.
l.
Remove the cover placed over the
condenser coil first and then three minutes
later unclamp the expansion tank to
thermostat coolant hose.
m. Continue running the coolant loop until
the coolant stabilizes at approximately
162 F (72 C).
n. Shut off engine and allow system to cool
down to the ambient temperature.
o. Remove the fill hardware and check the
level of the coolant (expansion tank should
be completely full).
p. Ensure the coolant level in the overflow
tank is adequate.
5. With the system completely cooled down,
install a Cooling System Pressure Test Kit,
such as Mityvac MV4530 or similar tool.
6. Start the system and monitor the coolant
temperature until the unit reaches normal
operating temperature of 160-165 F (71-74 C).
7. Shut the engine off and wait 3-5 minutes and
check the pressure. If the pressure is at 14 psig
or higher, the system is full of coolant and all
the trapped air has been removed. Proceed to
Step 9, otherwise continue to Step 8.
8. If the pressure is below 14 psig the system still
has air trapped. Repeat the coolant fill process,
Steps 4 thru 7 until the pressure is above 15
psig.
9. With the system completely cool, remove the
pressure test tool and replace the expansion
cap.
10. The system is now completely full of engine
coolant.
NOTE: Current production engine coolant
volumes with Micro-channel radiators and Tier
4 engines are as follows:
CAUTION: Do not leave the pressure test
tool unattended on a running unit. Do not
use the pressure relief valve on the test
tool until the system has completely cooled
down. If the pressure exceeds 17 psig turn
the unit off and let the system cool down.
Follow all instructions and warnings
supplied with the pressure test tool.
