Clutch Maintenance

Figure 248: New Clutch
2. Spin Check – Performed on engine or
removed from engine.
Spin the clutch while held in a vertical
position. If the clutch makes a grinding noise,
the bearings have failed and clutch must be
replaced.
IMPORTANT: Spinning the clutch in the
horizontal position may make it appear that
there is no issue with the bearings. Spin the
clutch in the vertical position to check it
properly.
3. Additional checks if the Visual and Spin
Checks are OK, and the unit is not
disassembled and is operational.
•
Move the belt and rotate the housing of the
clutch. There should be no rubbing or
resistance. It should spin freely.
•
As the engine starts look for the clutch to
lag behind. It should let the diesel start
freely then ¡§catch up¡¨ to the engine when
it goes into either low or high speed. The
clutch should start to engage around 600
RPM.
•
If a strobe light is available, check for slip
in the unit. Some slip is planned.
•
Start Up
•
Slow slip rate to protect against rust
bonding.
If there is slip detected of more than 4-5
revolutions per minute, it might be an
indication that there is a problem starting
(depending on how fast the slip rate is).
•
If the unit can be run in electric mode.
Have the unit run in electric mode to see if
the clutch turns over freely. After a short
run time in electric mode have them check
the heat in the clutch. If the temperature is
rising there may be a shoe dragging.
Remove and inspect the clutch if this is the
case.
4. Additional checks if the Visual and Spin
Checks are OK, and the unit is not
operational.
Remove and visually inspect the clutch.
•
Check that the 6 springs are in place and
tight (not stretched and off the pins).
•
Rotate the housing and make sure that it
spins freely.
•
Visually check the pads. Make sure they
are clean and free of debris and
contaminants.
•
Make sure the pads have some material
left on them. The material is about 3/16
inch for a new clutch.
•
Some cracks in the lining are normal. As
long as the material is not coming off due
to the cracks it is not a problem.
Slightly less than 1/16 inch gap between shoes
and pulley face – consistent for all shoes
