TOOTH CONTACT

After b ri ngi ng the back l ash wit h i n the specifica
tion b y ch a n g i n g the secon d a ry d riven beve l
gear s h i ms, it wi l l be necessary to check tooth
contact.
•
R e m ove the secondary d r iven output shaft
asse m b l y fro m the left cra n kcase.
•
C lean and degrease the secon d a ry d riven beve l
gear teeth, and a p p l y a coat i n g of mach i n i st's
l ayout dye o r paste to severa l teeth .
•
Rei nsta l l the secondary d r i ven output shaft
assem b l y.
•
Rotate the secondary d riven beve l gea r severa l
turns i n both d i rections.
•
O bserve the tooth contact patter n m ade in the
dye o r paste.
•
Com p a re the tooth contact pattern to the
examp l es as shown in

•
I f tooth contact i s fou nd to be correct, go to the
F i na l Assem b l y su b-sect i o n , a n d comp l ete.
•
I f tooth contact is fou nd to be i ncorrect

, the shims of t h e secon d a ry d r ive beve l gea r
and seconda ry d riven beve l gea r m u st be chang
ed, tooth contact shou ld be re-checked u nt i l
co rrect.
CAUTI O N :
After t h e tooth contact a djustment has b e e n
performed , t h e backlash m u st b e re-checked,
beca u s e it may have c h a n g e d . Refer to t h e
backlash check sub-section , and readjust u ntil
tooth contact and backlash are both withi n the
s pecification s . I f you cann ot m a i ntain t h e
correct tooth contact w h e n a djustin g back
lash , both the d rive and driven bevel gears
s h o u l d be replaced .
